Wilberfoss Neighbourhood Watch
|

|
Wilberfoss has had a Neighbourhood Watch scheme running since 1988, but in recent years there have been very few volunteers to run it. This year has seen a massive improvement with a new team of 8 co-ordinators and hopefully more to come. These people are there to help and advise everyone about what to do in the event of problems, such as burglary, vandalism or anti-social behaviour; they are not there to patrol the streets sorting out problems. |
Neighbourhood Watch exists to:
-
cut crime and the opportunities for crime and anti-social behaviour
-
provide reassurance to local residents
-
encourage neighbourliness and closer communities, and
-
improve the quality of life for local residents
If you are interested in helping with Neighbourhood Watch in the village, contact Chris Gray on 01759 380061
Clubs meeting at the Community Centre include:
Wilberfoss Sewing Group - every Monday between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm. Members bring their own crafts, including knitting, sewing and card making, and everyone is happy to share their knowledge and provide help to others. Costing £2 per session (to include refreshments) it's a great opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends. The group currently consists of around 20 ladies and there is no restriction on age (or gender) but a sense of humour is a must!
Wilberfoss over 55s Club meets every last Monday in the month between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm (except May, August and December). As the name suggests, this is a group run for those who are over 55 years of age! With a current membership of 48, entertainment may include a speaker, a demonstration and much more. Topics covered are extremely diverse and this year include Cole Porter's Life and Music, Australia - The Great Barrier Reef, Kuranda & the Rain Forest and Behind the Scenes at the Cinema. Refreshments are served at each meeting and a raffle is held. The AGM in June includes a strawberry tea and a Christmas dinner is organised in December. The annual subscription from June 2007 is £4 and guests are welcome at £1 per session. For more information please telephone Ken Wright on Wilberfoss 388151.

Wilberfoss Bingo Club meets every Tuesday between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm. If you fancy a fun and friendly game of Bingo then why not join the Club! Wilberfoss Bingo Club currently has 20 members but would be delighted to see some new faces. All ages are welcome and all you need to bring is a marker or pen! Enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. There's even a raffle. The cost is 50p per book of 5 games. For further details please telephone either Rosemary Tinson on Wilberfoss 380494 or Ida Goodwin on 380485.
The Yorkshire Countrywomen's Association (YCA) meet every second Tuesday in the month between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm. Women of all ages are welcome to this friendly group (Yorkshire born or not!). With a current membership of approximately 60, meetings are well attended. An annual subscription of £5 covers 10 meetings. In June an evening out is organised, and a whole day's outing is organised in August. There is a raffle at each meeting (which costs £1) but tea, coffee and biscuits are provided free of charge. Visitors are also welcome at the cost of £1. Everyone enjoys a varied programme of illustrated talks, demonstrations, musical presentations and social evenings. Theatre outings are also arranged and evenings out offer excellent value for money. If this is something that interests you, why not give Gerry Thompson a ring on 01759 380388.
Wilberfoss Line Dancers meet every Wednesday between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm. Line Dancing is not only an opportunity to learn a new skill, it's also an excellent way to keep fit and have fun. Wilberfoss Line Dancers consist of a small group of volunteers who run classes for both beginners and competent line dancers. The classes are very light hearted and the group would welcome new members. Each session costs £3 and includes tea and biscuits. If you are interested, call Pat on Wilberfoss 380597. Go on, give it a go!
1st Wilberfoss Brownies meet every Wednesday between 5.45 pm and 7.00 pm (term time only). 1st Wilberfoss Brownies is run by three enthusiastic mums and currently caters for 24 brownies. Numbers cannot increase due to the adult to child ratio but there is a waiting list in operation. Eileen Green, or better known to the Brownies as Brown Owl, recommends putting your name on the list early to avoid disappointment. Brownies are aged between 7 and 10 years (after which they can move up to Guides). Each evening costs £1.50, which is paid half-termly, and as well as lots of crafty activities, Brownies are taken on trips out. This year sees the Brownies' first Pack Holiday to Scarborough! If you would like to put your daughter's name on the waiting list please call Eileen on Wilberfoss 380462.
Sequence Dancers meet every Thursday between 12.00 pm and 3.30 pm. This group of about 30 is run by Vera Hugill who has been teaching Sequence Dancing for many years. The sessions include half an hour's tuition for beginners and advanced dancers between 1.00 pm and 1.30 pm. This is followed by two hours of dancing. Chairs are positioned around the room for those wishing to take a break from dancing and tea, coffee and biscuits are served half way through the afternoon. The sessions cost £2 per person and are a fantastic opportunity to meet others and either brush up on your existing skills or learn new ones! For more information call Vera on 01430 860963.
Indoor Bowls Club meets every Friday evening between 7.30 pm and 9.30 pm. With a membership of around 20, the Bowls Club operates throughout the year and between October and March play in the Selby League, taking part in home and away matches. Not everyone who attends the Club is in the team however - some prefer to play just for fun! Bowling is a gentle form of exercise and the Club is currently looking for new members. If you fancy giving it a go contact Maureen on Wilberfoss 388945 or Richard on 388984. Membership is £20 per year and £2 per session.
